SOFTBALL BATTLES NO. 19 CALIFORNIA TIGHT BEFORE FALLING IN GAME TWO SUNDAY

CALIFORNIA, Pa. - The Clarion University softball team battled No. 19 California (Pa.) tough in game two of a PSAC West doubleheader Sunday before dropping a 4-3 decision at Cal.

The Golden Eagles lost game one 8-0 in five innings.

In the nightcap, Clarion trailed 2-1 going to the sixth but scored twice in the inning to take a 3-2 lead thanks to two-run home run by senior Lydia Middaugh, the first career home run for the rightfielder.

But Cal was able to rally with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth off Shawnna Crago to get the victory.

Crago pitched 4.1 innings of relief giving up three runs, just one earned, on four hits and a walk. Sarah Gossard started and went the first 1.2 innings giving up one unearned run on four hits while striking out one.

Megan Anderson had a pair of hits for Clarion continuing her hot weekend that saw her going 6 of 12 in four games Saturday and Sunday. Taylor Powell also added an RBI.

The Golden Eagles were no hit in game on by California's Alex Sagl, who struck out nine and allowed only one base runner on an error.

Paige Baker took the loss going 3.2 innings and giving up eight runs, seven earned, on nine hits while striking out two. Chelsea Zola retired the only batter she faced.

Clarion (3-17, 2-12) returns to action with a PSAC West doubleheader against Mercyhurst Monday in Clarion.
