MIDDAUGH DOUBLE HELPS SOFTBALL RALLY FOR GAME ONE WIN OVER EDINBORO IN SPLIT

EDINBORO, Pa. - Lydia Middaugh's two-run double capped a two-out, three-run rally in the top of the seventh of game one helping the Clarion University softball team earn a split of a PSAC West doubleheader at Edinboro Thursday.

Middaugh's double broke a 2-2 tie, Christina Tressler had tied the game with a home run three batters earlier, and gave the Golden Eagles a 4-2 victory in the opener of the doubleheader. Clarion then dropped the second game 6-2 in a game called because of darkness after six innings.

After a rain delay pushed back the start of game one, Clarion (5-21, 4-16 PSAC West) found itself down 2-0 going to the sixth inning but cut the deficit in half in the top of the sixth when Carra Stevens scored on an error off a batted ball by Paige Baker.

The Golden Eagles looked like they were going to fall 2-1, though, after Edinboro quickly retired the first two batters in the seventh. But Tressler came up with the clutch, game-tying home run

Tressler then came up with the clutch, game-tying home run, her second of the season and the fifth of her career to make it a new ballgame.

Taylor Powell then kept the rally going with a double to left, and Stevens singled her to third. Middaugh then shot the ball into the right-center field gap scoring both runners.

Edinboro (15-8-1, 7-6-1) managed a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh, but Chelsea Zola slammed the door shut to pick up her first win of the season and the seventh of her career.

Zola pitched the last two innings in relief of Baker and gave up two hits. Baker went the first five and gave up two runs on five hits while striking out five.

Powell had a pair of hits in four at bats to lead Clarion's offense.

Clarion carried the momentum from game one into the first inning of game two quickly striking for two runs thanks to a Tressler RBI single and an Edinboro error.

But the Fighting Scots got a run back in the bottom of the first then took the lead with two in the second before adding a single run in the fourth and two in the sixth before the game was called on account of darkness.

Ashley Barenchik was 2-for-3 with a run scored, Casey Wilcox also had a hit and has now hit safely in 13 of her last 17 games.

Lyndsey Jones took the loss going two innings and giving up three runs, none earned, on four hits and a walk. Shawnna Crago allowed three runs on four hits while striking out two.

Clarion is back in action Friday at Mercyhurst.
