CLARION, Pa. – Sophomore
Tyler Falk ran his hitting streak to 12 games, but Slippery Rock played the role of spoiler in the Clarion University baseball team's home opening doubleheader Friday sweeping a pair of games from the Golden Eagles.
The Rock used a three-run fifth inning to take game one 7-1 then rode wave of a five-run first inning in game two to a 15-4 victory.
Falk, Clarion's first baseman, was a bright spot on the day going 2-for-4 with a run scored in game one and following up with a 1-for-4 performance in the second game to extend his hit streak to the 12 games, the longest by a Golden Eagle in two years and tied for the fourth-longest hitting streak by a Clarion player since 2000.
Derek Danver joined Falk, who is hitting .375 on the year including .475 (19 of 40) during the hit streak, with multiple hits in the doubleheader going a combined 2-for-6 with Clarion's lone extra-base hit, an RBI double in the first inning of game two. Danver was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI in the second game after going 1-for-3 with a single in game one.
Falk and Danver had back-to-back singles with one out in the fourth inning of game one, but Clarion wasn't able to capitalize as
Tyler Delval and
Mike Lockhart grounded out sandwiched between a walk by
Jordan Mesoraco. Falk's one-out single in the inning was Clarion's first hit of the game.
The Golden Eagles finally broke through in the sixth when Falk singled up the middle leading off, went to second a Delval single. Mesoraco, who was 1-for-1 in the game with a pair of walks, then singled to left, and Falk scored when the leftfielder bobbled the ball for an error.
Kane McCall took the game one loss going five innings and allowing five runs, four earned, on 10 hits, two walks and two hit batters while striking out three.
Alex Borofski pitched two innings giving up two runs on three hits.
Jake Nogalo was 3-for-4 with an RBI to lead Slippery Rock, while Jordan Faretta was 1-for-3 with three RBIs. Ryan Oglesby picked up the win throwing a complete-game six hitter allowing one unearned run. He walked three and struck out four.
In game two, the Rock pounced on Clarion starter
Josh Friel for five runs in a third of an inning. Wildness did in the first-year Clarion righty, as Friel walked four while also throwing two wild pitches and giving up a pair of hits.
Brendan Fitzgerald then gave up four runs on five hits while striking out one in 1.2 innings of work, and Borofski pitched 2.2 innings allowing four runs, one earned, on five hits. The Rock proceeded to add four more runs in the second and four more in the fifth before finishing off its scoring with a two-run sixth.
Clarion got two of the runs back in the first when Danver doubled home
Drew Pirritano, who had led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch. Danver then scored when
Mike Lockhart reached on an error.
The Golden Eagles added a run in the fourth when Lockhart singled to center leading off and went to second on a one-out single by Lopez before being awarded third on the play thanks to an interference play on Slippery Rock's shortstop.
Josh Ponsoll then delivered an RBI single.
Clarion picked up an unearned run in the sixth when
Joey Lopez walked and went to third when Ponsoll hit into a fielder's choice where the shortstop threw the ball away trying to get Lopez at second.
Ben Thomas then hit into a double play with Lopez scoring.
Adam Urbania had a monster game for Slippery Rock going 4-for-5 with three doubles and a home run while driving in six and scoring three times. Kyle Vozar was also 3-for-4 with two doubles and triple while picking up three RBIs and scoring twice.
Slippery Rock improves to 22-15, 12-10 in the PSAC West with the sweep, while Clarion drops to 7-22 and 5-17 in conference play.
The two teams meet again Saturday in a doubleheader at Slippery Rock.
