CLARION, Pa. – Despite a strong pitching performance from
Paige Baker and a home run from
Megan Anderson, the Clarion University softball team dropped its season finale, 2-1, to visiting California (Pa.) Monday afternoon.
The second game was deemed by the PSAC to be unnecessary pertinent to rule 2.1.4.5 of the PSAC softball handbook, which says "Should the final regular-season-mandated date on the original schedule be reached and make-up games still remain to be completed only those contests that have a bearing on the outcome of the conference tournament seeding will be completed," and was not played since the final regular-season-mandated date was Sunday. With the victory, it is believed Cal will be awarded the PSAC West title based on the most wins in PSAC West play.
Baker threw well enough for Clarion to win tossing perhaps her best game of the year going seven innings and allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four.
Anderson, meanwhile, gave the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead with a home run leading off the bottom of the first. It was her second home run of the season, and the junior ended the year as Clarion's leading hitter (.353) while adding six doubles, a triple and 11 RBIs. The .353 average is the ninth-best mark by a Golden Eagle since 1993.
Fellow junior
Christina Tressler added a 2-for-3 performance to raise her season average to .288, one of three Golden Eagle regulars to hit at least .288.
Casey Wilcox finished with a .301 average, as Clarion hit .256 as a team, the sixth-best mark at the school since 1993 and the second-best in the last 10 years behind the 2012 team, which hit .261.
Cal tied the game with a run in the third then scored again in the fourth what turned out to be the game-winning run, in the fourth.
Clarion finishes the season, the first under head coach
Cheryl Peterson, at 6-31 overall and 5-26 in the PSAC West. The five conference wins are the most by the Golden Eagles since winning eight in 2004 (8-12) and it's the best conference win percentage for Clarion since going 4-12 in 2010. Peterson's five conference wins are the most by a first-year head coach since Natalie Martin won 10 (10-10) in 2003 and tie Ron Baum (2001) and Tina Gustley (1997) for the second-most conference wins by a first-year head coach at Clarion.
