CLARION HONORS RECORD 178 ATHLETES ON NCAA STUDENT ATHLETE DAY                (Clarion, Pa.): The Clarion University Athletic Department is honoring a record 178 student-athletes (49.4%) today, while the NCAA marked its 28
th celebration of National Student Athlete Day on Monday, April 6, 2015. The NCAA honors student athletes who have achieved a 3.0 cumulative grade point average in their careers.
Clarion's 49.4% and 178 honored athletes is the highest number and percentage of athletes recognized in the four years Clarion has been participating in National Student Athlete Day. Last year Clarion honored 164 (47%), while in 2013 the Eagles recognized 48.4% - 157 athletes out of 324 and in 2012 honored 47.4%. – 154 out of 325.
Counting each student-athlete only once, even if they participate in multiple sports, the Golden Eagles have 178 student athletes with a current cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher – out of 360 total student athletes. That means 49.4% of Clarion's student-athletes will receive NCAA honors since they are maintaining a 3.0 or above grade point average.
"Our main mission is to prepare our student-athletes for their academic careers," said Athletic Director Dave Katis. "We are blessed to have quality student-athletes, coaches, faculty and administrators help our student-athletes reach those goals. We are excited about the continued outstanding academic and athletic performance of our student-athletes," said Katis. "We are proud to have them in blue and gold."
The National Student-Athlete Day was created by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports and Northeastern University's Sport In Society. It is co-sponsored with the NCAA and the National Federation of State High School Associations.
