CLARION GRIDDERS DOWN CHEYNEY 59-6 CLARION, PA.: Clarion qb
Connor Simmons tossed 4 td's passes, three of them to
Matt Lehman, as the Golden Eagles defeated Cheyney 59-6 in a PSAC crossover game on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.
Clarion raised its record to 3-0 overall, while Cheyney dropped to 0-3. The 53-point margin of victory is third most in school history behind a 55-point win over Lock Haven (69-14; 1987) and a 54 point win over LH (57-3) in 1996. The 59 points scored with 9
th highest in school history.
The Golden Eagles scored on their first possession, driving 52-yards in seven plays to take a 7-0 lead. Safety
Colton McKay intercepted a Cheyney pass at the Clarion 48 to set up the drive. Simmons capped the drive with a 9 yard td pass to
Delrece Williams at 12:02, and with
Phil Esposito's PAT, Clarion led 7-0.
Clarion drove from its own 25 to the Cheyney 13 on its next possession, but the drive stalled and
Esposito came on and booted a 30-yard field goal to give the Eagles a 10-0 lead at 4:09 of the first.
Cheyney came back with its only score of the game when qb Dominick Trautz found tight end Christian Sanchez alone in the middle of the field at about the 50 and went the rest of the way, 66-yards for a Cheyney td. The PAT was blocked by
Avery Howsare and the score stood at 10-6.
The Eagle defense came up with the next score early in the second quarter. With the Wolves facing a second and 20 at their own 10, defensive tackle
Matt Koerper sacked Trautz, caused a fumble that noseguard
Andrew Fragale recovered in the endzone for a Clarion td. The PAT made it 17-6 with 10:55 left in the second.
The "D" set up Clarion's next score as well. Eagle defensive end
Tyrone Archie sacked Trautz at the Cheyney 3, and the fumble caused by Archie was recovered by
Brandon Vocco at the Wolves 6. Two plays later Simmons lofted a jump ball in the endzone that Lehman clutched for the score, giving Clarion a 24-6 lead at 3:23 of the second.
On Cheyney's next drive
Brandon Vocco caused a fumble by Lewis-Kearse and
Chris Liberto recovered at the Cheyney 13. On third and five from the 8, Simmons again arched a pass toward Lehmen who hauled in the 8-yard td pass, giving Clarion a 31-6 halftime edge.
Clarion started the second half with the ball on the Eagle 42, and on the first play from scrimmage Simmons hit Lehman for 33 yards to the Cheyney 25. Four plays later Simmons hit Lehman again in the endzone for a 10-yard td pass and a 38—6 lead.
Clarion freely substituted from the third quarter to the end of the game.
Clarion's last three scores came on a 65 yard pass from
Darelle Carson to Khalil Webster, a
Jacob Craig 27-yard interception return for a td, and a
KaDarrius Campbell 5 yard run. Clarion had 24 first downs to Cheyney's 5. The Golden Eagles totaled 454 yards of total offense including 165 rushing and 289 passing.
Connor Simmons completed 17 of 31 passes for 221 yards and 4 td's.
Matt Lehman caught 6 passes for 96 yards and 3 td's, while
Mark Nicholas had 3 grabs for 25 yards and
Khalil Webster 1 for 65.
KaDarrius Campbel had 14 rushes for 72 yards and 1 td, while
Delrece Williams had 16 carries for 66 yards, plus caught 3 passes for 48 yards and 1 score.
The Clarion defense limited Cheyney to 101 yards of offense.
Jacob Craig led the team with 8 tackles, 1 tfl' and 1 interception return for a score. Mat Koerper had 7 hits, 2 sacks, 2.5 tfl's and 1 fumble caused.
Tyrone Archie and
Avery Howsare both collected 2 sacks.
Clarion travels to Gannon next Saturday to start PSAC-West play. Kickoff at Gannon is set for Noon.
