(Clarion, Pa.): The Clarion University Women's Volleyball team defeated Juniata 3-2 on Tuesday night at Waldo S. Tippin Gym, defeating the AVCA's #1 rated NCAA Division III team. The Golden Eagles were led by
Gabrielle Olson with 12 kills and 6 blocks,
Kaley Pittsley with 46 set assists, and
Morgan Seybold with 41 digs.
With the win Clarion improves to 8-7, while Juniata suffered their first loss on the season making them 15-1.
In the first set, Juniata came out of the gates strong and won a hard fought set 30-28.
Clarion stormed back strong by winning the second and third sets of the match 25-20 and 25-23 respectively. In the second set with Clarion ahead only 20-18,
Abbey Cox got a big kill, and
Gabrielle Olson notched 3 kills, including the final point in the 25-20 win.
In set three Juniata jumped out to leads of 8-4 and 18-14, but the Eagles would not be denied. Clarion battled back to tie at 23-23, when Olson again scored with a kill and
Kaley Pittsley sealed the win with a service ace and a 25-23 come-from-behind win.
Juniata did not quit however, and won the fourth set 25-17 and set the match up for an epic final set.
The Golden Eagles won the fifth set, jumping out to a 10-3 lead and won by a 15-10 score, pulling out the big victory.
Taylor Braunagel had two kills early and finished off the win with a kill for the final point.
Clarion also got key contributions from Marissa Roberston with 11 kills, 10 digs, and 4 blocks,
Mackenzie Biggs with 10 kills and 6 blocks,
Taylor Braunagel with 9 kills, and
Abbey Cox with 8 kills, 7 digs, and 4 blocks.
Pittsley led the Golden Eagles with 46 set assists and also added 6 digs. Seybold led the Golden Eagles with 41 digs, while
Morgan Herold added 10 digs, and
Catherine Ferragonio added 7 digs.
The Golden Eagles return to action October 2
nd as they travel to Edinboro.
