WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The Clarion women's basketball team stifled West Chester on the road for their first conference win of the season on Sunday, with the Golden Eagles defeating the Golden Rams 67-58 at Hollinger Fieldhouse. Clarion (2-3, 1-1 PSAC) will be back in action on Wednesday when they take on Malone on the road.
Â
The Golden Eagles held West Chester to 35.6 percent shooting from the field and didn't allow the Golden Rams to top 20 points in any of the four quarters. West Chester had the edge in team rebounding but Clarion did an exceptional job in taking away the basketball, forcing 25 turnovers and recording just 10 of their own. Subsequently, Clarion scored 18 points off turnovers and allowed just five.
Â
Tyra Polite went off for 20 points on 7-of-17 shooting, including a 4-of-9 mark from three-point range.Â
Quorea Pearyer and
Amesha Harden-Pulliam each finished with 17 points, and
Jen Straw came off the bench to pull in a team-high eight rebounds. Pearyer also contributed six rebounds and five assists.
Â
West Chester opened the game on an 11-4 run and led by a 13-7 score with 2:42 remaining to go in the first quarter but the Golden Eagles roared back to take control of the action. Polite put Clarion ahead 18-17 with a jumper with 31 seconds left in the first period, and later drilled a three-pointer with 2:15 to play in the second quarter to make it 30-27.  Pearyer knocked down a longball of her own with two seconds left to set a 37-32 advantage at the half.
Â
The Golden Rams briefly held a three-point lead in the third quarter when Porscha Speller scored on a fast break layup to make it 41-38. Pearyer cut into that lead with a jumper to make it 41-40 and Harden-Pulliam tied it at 42 with a score in the paint. Polite then broke the deadlock with a three-pointer with 3:49 left in the period and then scored a transition bucket to open a 47-42 advantage.
Â
Straw notched a make in the paint to give her team a 50-45 advantage, and the lead reached double-digits when Polite made a three-pointer with 6:36 remaining in regulation.Â
Jordan Bekelja laid one in with 3:10 left to make it 59-50 and Pearyer bumped the lead back to 10 points with two free throws as the Golden Eagles cruised to the eventual nine-point win.
