CLARION, Pa. – The Clarion women's basketball team put on a historic scoring display at home on Wednesday, defeating Penn State-Greater Allegheny by a score of 117-42 at Tippin Gymnasium. The win is the first home victory for the Golden Eagles (3-4) this season, who opened up a four-game homestand.
Â
The 117 points scored against the Nittany Lions represented the fifth-most in a single game in program history and the most since Clarion scored 138 points against Bethany on Nov. 21, 1992. Just one night earlier the Golden Eagles had set the program record for scoring, notching 148 points against Westminster on Nov. 20, 1992. Clarion last topped the century mark in the 2013-14 season, a 104-88 win over West Liberty.
Â
The Golden Eagles set a new program record for assists in a game, dishing out 38 helpers on 47 made shots. The previous record was 35, set against Columbia Union on Feb. 1, 1999. Clarion's 47 field goals made represented the third-best total in program history, and the Golden Eagles' 57.3 field goal percentage was just .05 from ranking 10th in a single game. They knocked down 18 three-pointers against the Nittany Lions, tied for the fifth-best mark in program history.
Â
Amesha Harden-Pulliam and
Quorea Pearyer tied for the game-high with 20 points apiece, leading an assembly of six Golden Eagles to reach double-digits in scoring. Pearyer further filled out the score sheet with seven rebounds and six assists.Â
Jordan Bekelja added 12 points, six assists and five steals, while three bench players –
Shelby Coughenour (12),
Jen Straw (10) and
Taylor Moltz (12) – also scored in double digits.
Â
The onslaught started early and persisted through all 40 minutes of action, with Clarion opening the game on a 9-0 run capped by a transition bucket from
Delrika Jones-Carey. Harden-Pulliam knocked down a three-pointer to make it 12-2 with 7:29 left in the first quarter, and Straw bumped the lead to 21 points with a pair of free throws down the stretch. Straw capped the scoring for the Golden Eagles in the first half, putting back her own miss to make it 32-7 at the halftime break.
Â
That trend continued in the second quarter. Moltz drained a three-pointer to make it 41-9 with 7:34 left in the second quarter, and the lead reached 41 points when
Tracy Wiehe took a feed in the paint from Pearyer and laid it in to make it 52-11. Pearyer scored on a fast break sparked by a steal from
Maniah Robinson with just 11 seconds left in the quarter, and Clarion lead 58-16 at halftime.
Â
The lead topped 60 points for the first time midway through the third quarter, when Pearyer made a three to make it 82-20, and Bekelja added a triple of her own to make it 85-22 with 4:13 left. The high water mark of the game came in the waning minutes when Moltz hauled in a defensive rebound and rushed down the floor for a midrange jumper with 43 seconds left in the game, making it 117-40.
