Wrestling Falls in EWL Opener at Boro

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Clarion wrestling team closed out their 2016 with a difficult result on the road on Monday, falling by a score of 31-6 to Edinboro at McComb Fieldhouse.  The Golden Eagles (0-4, 0-1 EWL) will be back in action on Jan. 8 when they take on Davidson and Appalachian State in Boone, N.C.

The Golden Eagles struggled against the team that has won each of the last six PSAC championships, with Brock Zacherl and Dustin Conti recording the lone wins for Clarion on Monday.

Zacherl notched the first win of the night for Clarion, starting with a six-point blitz in the first period to take the early advantage over Ozzy Lugo.  He immediately took Lugo down to start the match and posted a four-point near fall to build a 6-0 advantage after one period.  Things stalemated in the second but began moving again in the third, with Lugo notching a late takedown to rob Zacherl of potential bonus points.  That said, the result was never truly in question.  Zacherl's lead and ride time advantage were too great to overcome, with the sophomore earning an 11-5 decision.

Conti started strong in his 197-pound match against Dylan Reynolds, taking him down 1:01 into the first period for the 2-0 lead.  He proceeded to ride him out for the rest of the period and then notched an escape to open the second, taking a 3-0 lead.  Conti ceded just four seconds of that riding time advantage in the second period and carried that lead into the final stanza.  Reynolds never got off the mat the rest of the way as Conti rode him out through the rest of the period to claim the 4-0 decision.

Edinboro started the night with a major decision at 125 pounds, with Sean Russell defeating Jake Gromacki 12-4 thanks to a late takedown and the riding time advantage.  Roshaun Cooley fell by a score of 7-2 in the 133-pound match as Edinboro started out with a 7-0 team lead.   Zacherl's win cut into that deficit but the Fighting Scots countered with back-to-back wins by pinfall to open the lead up to 19-3.  Things tightened up in the remaining matches on the mat but the Fighting Scots were the victors in all but one as they claimed the win.
