Game Recap: Basketball (Women's) |

EDINBORO TOPS WOMEN'S HOOPS ON SATURDAY

EDINBORO, Pa.Tania Holmes went off for a double-double and Ashley DeLeonibus added 10 points in her first start of the year, but the Clarion women's basketball team fell by an 80-49 score to Edinboro at McComb Fieldhouse on Saturday.  With the loss, the Golden Eagles fall to 8-18 overall and 8-12 in the PSAC West division.

Holmes scored a team-high 17 points and recorded a game-high 11 rebounds, including six boards on the offensive glass.  The senior played the entire game and was also effective on defense, recording three steals on the day.

DeLeonibus and Delrika Jones-Carey also broke double-digits in scoring against the Fighting Scots, with DeLeonibus doing so in her first career start for the Golden Eagles.  She went 5-of-6 from the field and recorded seven rebounds, while Jones-Carey went 5-of-10 from the field and added three boards.

Edinboro controlled the game on the glass, outrebounding Clarion 47-32, and shot 43.1 percent from the field.  They turned their rebounding advantage into points, as well, outscoring the Golden Eagles 15-10 in second-chance opportunities.

Clarion opened the game on a 6-2 run, with Holmes scoring on the game's first possession and DeLeonibus tipping in an offensive rebound with 7:36 to go in the first quarter to cap the run.  Holmes put Clarion ahead 11-9 with a three-pointer at the 3:43 mark, beating a winding-down shot clock to put her team ahead, but Edinboro went on a 9-0 run to end the first quarter to seize the lead.

The deficit remained around nine points for much of the second quarter as Clarion managed to hang tight with the Fighting Scots.  Jones-Carey cut Edinboro's lead to eight points with a layup after DeLeonibus dished to her in the paint, but the gap between the two teams remained at nine points and the end of the first half.

Edinboro tacked on in the third quarter, taking a 60-38 lead with 0:23 remaining in the period, and the lead surpassed 30 points by the end of the fourth quarter.
