MOUNTAINEER GRAPPLERS TOP CLARION 30-6

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – A pair of Golden Eagles claimed victories against one of the top opponents in the country, but the Clarion wrestling team fell by a score of 30-6 to West Virginia in Morgantown on Friday night.  With the loss Clarion falls to 6-12 overall on the season.  They will close the regular season on Sunday when they host nationally-ranked Pittsburgh at Tippin Gymnasium.

The pair of Brock Zacherl and Michael Pavasko each recorded wins by decision on Friday night, and in each case the match was decided by a narrow margin.  Zacherl recorded the first win of the evening for the Golden Eagles, edging out Anthony DeAngelo at 141 for a win by decision.  Neither wrestler scored a point in the first period but Zacherl took the early advantage in the second with a reversal to open.

The redshirt freshman took a 4-2 advantage over DeAngelo with a takedown in the third period, and Zacherl held on as the match wound to a close to complete the win.  He improved to 24-1 overall on the season with the victory.

Pavasko continued to impress heading down the last stretch of his senior season, piecing together an excellent third period to top Ross Renzi at 174.  He was held scoreless through the first two periods but Pavasko shone brightly in the third, opening with an escape and a takedown to take a 3-1 lead and adding another takedown late to seal the deal.  Pavasko added the riding time bonus to set the score at 6-2.

The Mountaineers were in control of the match otherwise, but despite their margin of victory West Virginia did not record many blowouts on the mat.  Both Brodie Zacherl and Evan DeLong pushed their matches to sudden victory periods, and Zack DeLuca actually led by an 8-2 score in the third period before being forced to retire due to injury.
