SOFTBALL SWEPT IN DH BY BLOOMSBURG

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Clarion softball team played its first games of the season against PSAC opponents, with the Golden Eagles falling by scores of 4-1 and 9-0 to Bloomsburg on Thursday.  With the losses Clarion falls to 2-13 overall.

Sarah Gossard drove in the lone run of the day for the Golden Eagles, knocking in a run midway through Game 1 en route to a 1-of-2 game at the plate.  Marissa Peterson, Cassidy Runyan and Rachel Hoffman also posted hits in the first game.  Peterson had the sole hit in the second game as the Huskies stymied the Golden Eagle offense, while Taylor Nonnenberg stole a base in the nightcap.

Hoffman threw five innings in the Game 1 start, allowing four runs – two earned – with eight strikeouts and just a single walk.  Kira Smith pitched a scoreless inning of relief.  Peterson took the loss in Game 2, allowing five runs.

The Huskies scored two runs in the bottom of the first and took a 3-0 lead in the third inning, but the Golden Eagles answered back with a tally in the top of the fifth.  Runyan hit a one-out single and Kiersten Gromley bunted her into scoring position in the next at-bat.  Gossard proceeded to stroke a double into the left-center gap to plate Runyan and make it 3-1.  Bloomsburg responded with two more runs, though, and held on for the win.

Bloomsburg jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second game but this time added a 7-0 fourth inning to take a 9-0 lead.  The Huskies set the Golden Eagles down in order in the fifth inning to complete the five-inning win.
