Box Score 2 RALEIGH, N.C. – The Clarion softball team earned its second doubleheader split of the weekend on Sunday, playing a pair of tight games against Fairmont State and Elizabeth City State. The Golden Eagles fell to the Eagles 4-3 but defeated the Vikings 6-5 in the nightcap, and are now 2-4 on the season.
Â
Taylor Nonnenberg went 4-of-4 in the game against Elizabeth City State, including three singles, a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. She recorded the first run of the day for the Golden Eagles, reaching home on an error, and in the second inning drove in
Cassidy Runyan and
Marissa Peterson with two outs.Â
Casey Wilcox came through in the next at-bat, smacking a double to plate Nonnenberg and make it 4-3. Wilcox went 2-for-4 against the Vikings, as did
Paige Baker. Runyan went 2-for-3.
Â
Clarion scored the eventual go-ahead runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, with
Christina Tressler reaching on a single to lead off. Runyan singled with one out to reach base herself, and in the next at-bat
Autumn Babcock knocked in Tressler for the Golden Eagles' fifth run. A passed ball allowed Runyan and Babcock to advance, and
Tierra Shope scored Runyan with a grounder to the shortstop to make it 6-3.Â
Â
The Vikings scored twice in the top of the sixth inning to pull within 6-5, but
Rachel Hoffman set them down in order in the seventh to clinch the win. She was solid in the circle all day, tossing a complete game and giving up four runs – all earned – while striking out six and walking two.
Â
Peterson scored the first run of the game against the Eagles, tying the game in the third inning on a pair of errors by Fairmont State. The Eagles were unable to escape the inning after Nonnenberg reached on an error by the centerfielder with two outs, and the rally continued after Wilcox reached on an error by the shortstop. They got out by stranding the runners on the corners on a groundout to second base by Baker.Â
Â
Cassie Daniels tied the score at 2-2 in the top of the fourth inning by driving in Tressler, who led off the inning with a double. The Golden Eagles went up 3-2 in the top of the fifth when Wilcox drove in Nonnenberg on a one-out single, but the Eagles tacked on two runs in the bottom of the fifth against
Sarah Gossard to claim the win. Peterson got the no-decision on the start, throwing four innings of two-run ball.
