BASEBALL EARNS SPLIT WITH SETON HILL

GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Clarion baseball team went on the road and earned an impressive split with one of the top teams in the PSAC West, coming from behind to win 5-4 against Seton Hill in the early game before falling 9-4 in the nightcap.  With the split, Clarion improves to 5-24 on the season, 2-16 in conference action.

The Golden Eagles scored five runs in the final two innings, including three runs in the top of the seventh, of the early game against the Griffins to steal a road victory.  Mitch Holmberg went a combined 4-of-8 in the leadoff spot while John Finke went 4-of-6 with two runs scored and an RBI.  Josh Ponsoll drove in three runs on the day, including a two-run home run in the sixth inning of the early game.

Kane McCall earned his first pitching win of the year in Game 1, throwing six innings against the Griffins and limiting them to four runs.  He was stingy with free passes, walking just one batter, and settled down after a rough start; he allowed all four runs in the first two innings but did not permit another Griffin to score the rest of the way.  Jay Moog got his first save of the season by pitching a clean sheet in the seventh.  Alex Borofski took the loss in Game 2, allowing five runs in 3.2 innings.

The Griffins scored on back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 3-0 lead and tacked on another run in the second after McCall's failed pickoff attempt allowed Garret Vrbanic to score.  The rally began in the top of the sixth inning when Holmberg pulled a single through the left side of the infield to lead off.  Ponsoll followed him with a clout over the left field fence that pulled the Golden Eagles to within 4-2.  Mike Lockhart singled and stole second with two outs but was caught trying to steal third, ending the inning.

Clarion manufactured three runs in the top of the seventh thanks to a couple Seton Hill miscues.  Austin Mike led off the inning by reaching first on an error, and Finke was hit by a pitch in the next at-bat to put runners on first and second with no outs.  Matt Kamenicky sacrificed the pair over with a bunt and Mason McGuire did the rest, tying the game with a liner up the middle to make it 4-4.  Holmberg followed up with a single and McGuire eventually scored on an errant throw from the shortstop, who tried to nab Holmberg at second base after Ponsoll fouled out.

That gave Clarion a 5-4 lead and Moog came in to shut the door in the seventh.  His only baserunner came as a result of a hit batsmen, but Moog stranded him at third with a swinging strikeout to end the game.

The Golden Eagles took an early lead in Game 2 with Holmberg scoring on an error by the shortstop to make it 1-0 in the first.  Seton Hill responded with four unanswered runs to make it 4-1 before Clarion scored again, with Lockhart bringing Tyler Delval home on a groundout.

The lead reached 9-2 for the Griffins, and though Ponsoll and Finke would drive in runs in the top of the seventh, it was too little too late as Seton Hill held on for the 9-4 win.
