CLARION, Pa. – A sterling pitching performance locked up their first win and a walk-off grand slam the second as the Clarion baseball team swept a doubleheader with Lock Haven at home on Wednesday.  Clarion won by scores of 2-1 and 10-7 in the early and late games, respectively.  It was the first doubleheader sweep for the Golden Eagles since April 12, 2015 against Gannon. With the wins, Clarion improves to 9-29 overall on the season.
Â
Kane McCall twirled a gem on the mound in Game 1, throwing a complete game three-hitter and permitting the Bald Eagles just one run early in the game. He struck out just three but was effective in keeping Lock Haven away from big innings, inducing 10 groundouts and one double play on the afternoon.
Â
Josh Ponsoll played the role of hero in Game 2, crushing a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning to with Clarion trailing the Bald Eagles by a score of 10-7. Clarion entered the inning trailing 7-3 but scored seven times in the home half of the inning to shock the Bald Eagles and steal the victory.Â
Jake Arienzo (1-0) threw a scoreless top of the inning for the victory.
Â
Dillon Wolbert reached first base in every single plate appearance of the day, going 5-of-7 while also reaching on an error and a fielder's choice. Ponsoll went a combined 3-of-5 with four RBI's in the two games despite not starting the second half of the doubleheader.
Â
Clarion's first run of the day came on a manufactured run in the bottom of the second, starting with a one-out single from
Mason McGuire. McGuire stole second base and came around to score two batters later on a two-out single up the middle from Wolbert.
Â
The Bald Eagles countered in the top of the third with an RBI double from Nick Stotler and both teams' bats went silent for a time. A pitching change for Lock Haven led to the go-ahead run for the Golden Eagles, though, despite a double-play ball limiting the damage. Ponsoll and
Tyler Delval hit back-to-back singles, but Delval was erased from the basepaths after
Tyler Falk hit into a 6-4-3 double play.Â
Mike Lockhart delivered with two outs, though, drilling a ball to left center to score Ponsoll and make it 2-1.
Â
McCall (2-4) was the beneficiary of his own double play in the top of the sixth inning, getting out of the frame after Ethan Moore hit a sharp liner to Falk at first base that also wiped Hunter Szafarski from the basepaths. McCall walked Justin Sleigh with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to provide some drama, but Sam Kysor flied out to McGuire in right field to end the game.
Â
Lock Haven opened the second game with a three-run first inning, taking the early lead and making it 4-0 in the next inning off starter
Alex Borofski. The Golden Eagles got their first run across in the bottom of the second inning when Lockhart got things going with a leadoff double. Wolbert lined a single into right-center to bring him around and cut the Bald Eagles' lead to 4-1.
Â
Clarion got back on the board in the fourth inning after a number of Lock Haven errors, eventually making it 4-2 after catcher Evan McFarland's attempt to throw out
Dillon Wolbert sailed into the outfield, allowing Lockhart to score. The Bald Eagles scored three times in the top of the fifth inning off reliever
Jay Moog to pad their lead, but Falk hit an RBI single to score McGuire in the bottom of the fifth to chip away at the Lock Haven advantage.Â
Â
Holmberg led off the home half of the seventh with a solo home run that crashed loudly into the scoreboard down the left field line, making it a 7-4 game. Delval reached on a single to center field but was wiped from the bases after Falk hit into a fielder's choice, giving the Golden Eagles just one more out to score three or more runs. Lockhart hit a seeing-eye single to center to extend the inning and Wolbert lined a pitch the opposite way to score Falk and make it 7-5.Â
Â
Matt Kamenicky beat out an infield single to load the bases, and a defensive miscue by the Bald Eagles on the next batter set up Ponsoll's heroics.Â
Brian Laurito hit a chopper to shortstop that was fielded cleanly but the throw to third base was dropped, allowing Wolbert to reach third on the error and scoring Lockhart to make it 7-6. Ponsoll did the rest, crushing a pitch well over the left field wall to give Clarion the improbable comeback win.
