BASEBALL CELEBRATES SENIOR DAY BUT FALLS TO THE ROCK

CLARION, Pa. – The Clarion baseball team's season came to a conclusion on Saturday afternoon as the Golden Eagles dropped a pair of decisions to Slippery Rock in a doubleheader finale.  Clarion lost by a 6-2 score in the first game and by an 8-5 mark in the second to finish the year 10-32 overall and 4-24 in PSAC West action.

The game represented the last in the careers of Clarion's six seniors – Kyle Armagost, Alex Borofski, Tyler Delval, Mike Lockhart, Josh Ponsoll and Sean White.  The group was honored before Game 1 in a ceremony where they received personalized jackets commemorating their time at Clarion.

Tyler Falk went 4-of-7 at the dish over the course of two games, including a 3-of-3 mark in Game 1 that also included two RBI's.  He also drove in a run in the second game.  Mitch Holmberg had three hits on Saturday as well as three runs scored, while Ponsoll reached base four times on the afternoon.

Delval (2-5) took the hill in Game 1, taking the loss despite throwing well for most of the game.  He allowed six runs – four earned – in his seven innings; other than a four-run sixth inning, though, he was effective in keeping the Rock off balance, striking out six and walking just one.  Armagost (1-5) allowed eight runs in his Game 2 start but Jay Moog came in for an impressive relief performance, throwing 3.2 innings of shutout ball to help the comeback attempt.

Clarion took the lead in Game 1 in the home half of the first inning, with Holmberg starting things off with a leadoff double and Falk driving him in with a two-bagger to right center to make it 1-0.  The Rock tied it up on an RBI single from Alex Bell in the third but the Golden Eagles responded immediately, with Falk scoring Holmberg on a two-out single to right.

Slippery Rock scored again in the top of the fourth inning and then exploded for four runs in the top of the sixth.  Two of those runs came across after a Clarion error with the bases load, and James Divosevic scored the final tally with a sac fly.  The Golden Eagles were retired in order in the bottom of the seventh to deliver a win for Slippery Rock.

The Rock jumped out to a substantial lead in the second game, going ahead 6-0 before Falk's fielder's choice in the third plated Clarion's first run.  The lead reached 8-1 thanks to a two-run homer from Slippery Rock's Alex Bell in the top of the fourth inning, but the Golden Eagles responded with the first of two RBI singles from Brian Laurito.  Clarion scored three times in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it a game again, with Lockhart, John Finke and Laurito bringing home runs with singles, and Moog induced three double plays over the course of 3.2 innings to keep it close.  Andrew Null battled wildness in relief but ultimately came on to earn the save.
