Soccer Plays to Scoreless Draw with Cal

CLARION, Pa. – The Clarion women's soccer team dueled with California to a scoreless draw on Saturday, as the Golden Eagles and Vulcans battled to a 0-0 final after 110 minutes of action at Memorial Stadium.  Clarion (1-2-1) will be back in action tomorrow when they face Ashland in a non-conference match.

The teams played to a defensive standstill, though Clarion certainly had the better of the chances throughout.  Aaliyah Odom just narrowly missed what would have been the winner in the 98th minute, when Meliah Roman carried the ball deep into Vulcan territory.  She advanced it along to Odom, who lifted an attempt over the crossbar.

California had the opportunity to take the win with just seven seconds left in the first overtime after a Clarion penalty in the box gave them a free kick.  Kira Carberry's attempt sailed harmlessly over the net to send the game to the second overtime.

Clarion's best opportunity in regulation came in the 54th minute, this time on a connection between Odom and Marina Kelly.  Odom elevated a beautiful cross pass through the box to Kelly, who immediately fired a shot on net.  Meghan Jayes slid over to make the save.

Clarion very nearly took advantage of a Jayes miscue in the first half to take the lead in the 33rd minute.  Jayes came out to challenge a shot and tripped up a Clarion player at the top of the box, earning a yellow card and setting up a free kick for Erin Rodgers.  Rodgers pushed her shot wide right as the Vulcans avoided the damage.
