Volleyball Snaps Skid With Win over ODU

FINDLAY, Ohio – The Clarion volleyball team made up for a tough start to the weekend with a solid finish on Saturday, defeating Ohio Dominican 3-1 (25-20, 18-25, 25-19, 25-20) at the TownePlace Suites Classic hosted by Findlay.  The win snaps a four-match losing streak for Clarion, who is now 3-4 on the year.

Marissa Robertson went off for a double-double against the Panthers, ripping a match-high 17 kills while also recording 16 digs and a solo block.  Taylor Braunagel swatted 12 kills of her own and hit .257 on the afternoon.  The third Golden Eagle with double-digit kills was Julia Holden, who added 10.  Catherine Ferragonio led the way defensively with a match-high 17 digs while Mackenzie Biggs added six kills and five blocks.

Leah Vensel and Kaley Pittsley combined for 41 of the team's 50 assists as they set the Golden Eagles to a .221 attack percentage.  By comparison, Ohio Dominican hit just .143 in the match.

Clarion flew out to a 9-1 lead to open the first set, with Braunagel at one point serving seven straight points including an ace.  The Panthers pulled as close as 12-9 but Lauryn Driscoll opened the lead back up with a kill.  The score was just 22-20 after a kill by Kelly Nadler, but Robertson responded with a kill of her own and Vensel forced set point with an ace.  Braunagel ended the set 25-20 with the kill off a set by Vensel.

The Golden Eagles bounced back from their second set loss by rallying for a victory in the third, erasing an early deficit and pulling away for the win.  Clarion trailed 7-4 at one point but took the lead for good at 15-14 on a kill by Robertson.  Holden helped Clarion win the race to 20 with a kill, and Biggs made it 23-19 with a blast of her own.  Two straight attack errors by Ohio Dominican gave the Golden Eagles the set and the 2-1 advantage.

The Pantehrs again led early in the fourth set, opening on a 9-3 run, but Biggs and Olivia Olson tied it at 12 on a block and Braunagel took the lead with a kill on the next point.  Braunagel made it 20-14 with a kill, and Holden scored on match point to break the Golden Eagles' losing streak.
