MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Clarion women's basketball team got off to a fast start on the road, but were unable to sustain the pressure as they fell by a 72-59 score at Millersville on Saturday. The Golden Eagles (3-4, 0-3 PSAC) will search for a split on the weekend tomorrow when they take on Shippensburg.
Â
Clarion opened the game with a 23-16 advantage after the first quarter, but the Marauders countered by outscoring the Golden Eagles 43-21 in the next two periods. It appeared that Clarion righted the ship in the fourth quarter, outscoring Millersville 15-13, but it was not enough to close the gap.
Â
Taylor Moltz set a career-high with 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field, including a 5-of-7 day from three-point range. The junior guard made her first three shots of the game and six of her first seven as the Golden Eagles took a lead early in the game. Clarion shot 11-of-25 from three-point range as a team for a 40.0 three-point field goal percentage.Â
Amesha Harden-Pullium and
Jordan Bekelja each chipped in 11 points.
Â
It was an 8-0 run that got the ball rolling for Clarion, with Moltz and Bekelja making back-to-back three-pointers in under a minute, and
Tracy Wiehe scored at the 8:37 mark to cap the run. Harden-Pullium drained a trey with 7:25 remaining in the first quarter to make it 11-2, and the deficit stayed similar throughout the period. Harden-Pullium made another three to make it 17-8, and Bekelja hit a midrange jumper with 1:06 left to set the deficit at 23-14.
Â
Millersville countered, though, and took the lead for good at the 7:46 mark of the second quarter. Things looked destined for a double-digit Marauders' lead entering the halftime break, but Moltz made a three-pointer with 37 seconds left to keep it at 36-30 entering the locker room. Clarion pulled within four points in the third quarter after a layup from
Yndiah Bobo made it 42-38, but a 17-5 run by Millersville started to put the outcome out of reach. The Golden Eagles battled but could not drive the deficit under 10 points, eventually falling by 13 at the final buzzer.
