MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Clarion softball team found some of its footing in its second day of action this season, but the Golden Eagles were kept out of the win column with losses to Le Moyne (L 5-2) and Merrimack (L 2-0) in a doubleheader on Saturday. The Golden Eagles will close out the weekend with New Haven tomorrow morning.
Â
The Golden Eagles saw their pitching gain traction, particularly in the late game against Merrimack.Â
Paige Baker tossed a gem in that match-up, allowing just one run on two hits in 4.0 innings pitched, while
Sarah Gossard entered in relief and allowed just one run in 3.0 innings. Baker also had a successful relief outing in the first game, allowing just an unearned run in 2.0 innings after replacing
Macy Rubin.
Â
In the early game against Le Moyne, the offense got things going and tacked on a pair of late runs in a comeback effort.Â
Haley Pszyk led off the inning by reaching on an error and advancing to second base, and
Casey Wilcox stroked a liner to right-center to bring her home and cut the Dolphins' lead to 5-1.Â
Daivonna Battle sacrificed Wilcox over to second, and Wilcox moved up to third on a passed ball with just one out.Â
Autumn Babcock eventually brought her around to score on a hard groundout to shortstop, granting Wilcox enough time to reach home to make it 5-2. The rally ended on a 6-3 groundout by
Cassidy Runyan.
Â
The late game against the Warriors was scoreless through the first two innings, with Merrimack breaking through for an unearned run in the top of the third.Â
Natalie Else hit a leadoff single to start the home half of the inning but was erased by a fielder's choice, and the threat was canceled entirely when Runyan grounded into a double play to end the inning.
