EDINBORO, Pa. – The Clarion women's basketball team locked up its first winning season since 2010 with an impressive road victory, defeating Edinboro 67-59 at McComb Fieldhouse on Saturday. The Golden Eagles (15-13, 12-10 PSAC) will face Mercyhurst in the first round of the PSAC Tournament on Monday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
Â
Three Golden Eagles scored in double-digits against the Fighting Scots, with
Tyra Polite scoring a game-high 17 points in a full 40 minutes of action.Â
Delrika Jones-Carey finished with 13 points and five rebounds, and
Jen Straw added 12 points and six boards in just 24 minutes.Â
The Golden Eagles are guaranteed to have a winning record at the end of the season, the first time that's happened since the 2009-10 season. Â Their 12-10 conference record represents their first winning season in conference play since the 2007-08 campaign. Â Clarion has already improved on last year's record by six games, and have improved by 13 games since a 2-25 record in
Jana Ashley's first season as head coach.
Â
Clarion held the Fighting Scots to just a 37.1 field goal percentage and outrebounded them 41-32. There was a big difference at the free throw line as well, with the Golden Eagles going 18-of-23 and the Fighting Scots just 8-of-15. The Golden Eagles withstood a rough second quarter and rebounded with a strong third to retake control of the lead and the game.
Â
Edinboro led by as many as eight points in the second quarter as they outscored Clarion 21-12 and took a 32-27 lead into halftime. The advantage reached seven points early in the third quarter, but Straw knocked down jumpers on back-to-back possessions to cut the advantage to 39-37.Â
Amesha Harden-Pullium gave Clarion the lead with a three-pointer at the 1:52 mark of the third, making it 45-43, and then made it a two-possession game with a pair of free throws less than a minute later. Straw made a midrange jumper with 20 seconds left in the third to give the Golden Eagles a 50-44 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Â
That lead reached three possessions early in the fourth when Ashley Deleonibus made a jumper in the paint to make it 52-44. Edinboro pulled to within two points with 6:16 left but got no closer.Â
Jordan Bekelja made it a nine-point edge with 18 seconds left thanks to a pair of free throws.
