Softball Wraps Florida Trip Against Wayne State, Merrimack

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Clarion softball team wrapped up its weeklong residency in Florida on Friday, falling by scores of 8-0 to Wayne State and 9-1 to Merrimack in the PFX Spring Games this afternoon.  The Golden Eagles (1-17) will play at the University of the Sciences next week and will make their home opener a week later against Bloomsburg.

Casey Wilcox went 2-of-5 at the plate over the course of both games, while Laura Sadowski drove in the lone run for the Golden Eagles in the doubleheader.  Taylor Nonnenberg scored that run, thanks to a leadoff triple late in the game against Merrimack.

Paige Baker got the start against the Warriors in the early game, allowing four runs in 4.0 innings pitched.  Macy Rubin allowed four runs in relief.  Kira Smith got the start in Game 2 and allowed just one run in 3.2 innings pitched, but took the hard-luck loss as Clarion was unable to top Merrimack late in the game.  Rachel Hoffman struck out six in just 3.1 innings of relief.

Clarion's run against Merrimack came in the bottom of the sixth inning with the team trailing 4-0.  Nonnenberg smashed a leadoff triple and scored on a groundout by Laura Sadowski.  The Warriors got Sadowski at first but weren't fast enough to get Nonnenberg, who made it 4-1.  Clarion allowed five runs in the seventh inning, though, as Merrimack held on to win.
