BUTLER, Pa. - The Clarion University baseball team dropped a double-header to Slippery Rock by scores of 4-3 and 13-4 Thursday afternoon at Pullman Park. The losses move the Golden Eagles to 3-8 on the season (0-2 PSAC). The Blue and Gold will return to action for another double-header against the Rock Sunday afternoon starting at 1 p.m.
The first game of the afternoon treated fans in attendance to some free baseball as the Golden Eagles rallied from a 3-2 deficit to send it to extra innings. After knocking in a pair of doubles off of SRU pitcher Alex Pantuso in the first-inning, the junior hurler managed to stifle the Clarion offense for most of the game, tossing five straight no-hit innings.
Clarion would solve the Pantuso problem in the bottom of the sixth, however. Trailing 3-2 with one out,
Tyler Falk managed to draw a walk after
Matt Kamenicky reached on a walk of his own one batter earlier. A wild pitch advanced Kamenicky to third before a perfectly placed SAC bunt from shortstop
Joey Lopez drove him home to tie the game at three all.
Clarion would have a prime opportunity to walk it off in the bottom of the seventh, however a Kamenicky strikeout ended the inning and sent the game to extras. One inning later
Garrett Goslaw grounded into a double-play with runners on the corners that helped SRU out of another jam. The Rock would take advantage managing a run in the top of the ninth to secure 4-3 extra-innings win.
Game two was another barnburner early on, as both teams traded big big innings to start things off. After allowing SRU to race out to an early 3-0 lead, the Golden Eagles responded with a three-run second of their own courtesy of big hits from
Cole Shaffer,
Austin Mike,
Wes Lang, and
Mitch Holmberg.
However Slippery Rock managed a few more big innings at the plate, tacking on three more in teh fourth and six in the sixth to secure the 13-4 win.
