APEX, Nc.- The Clarion University softball team fell to Wayne State University Sunday afternoon by a final score of 10-0. The loss moves the Golden Eagles to 1-9 on the season. Clarion will return to action on March 13th when they head down to Florida for their spring training trip.
Kira Smith got the nod in the circle Sunday for the Blue and Gold and looked dominant early on. Although she walked Wayne center fielder Allie Buchanan, a heads-up play from first-basemen
Kimberly Burdett on a sharply hit line-drive doubled off the runner to get Clarion out of the inning 1-2-3.
Smith would enjoy another quick inning in the second thanks to a great throw from right-fielder
Daivonna Battle that picked off the Wayne baserunner at second base.
Wayne's defense and pitching was equally as stingy, however, and managed to give up just two hits all game.
A three-hit, three-run third inning opened up the game for Wayne State, who never looked back. They would tack on three more in the fourth and four in the fifth and sixth for good measure to close teh game out and earn the win. Clarion finishes the weekend tournament with a 1-4 record.
