Softball drops home opener to Bloomsburg

CLARION, Pa. -  The Clarion University softball team lost twice Sunday in an afternoon double-header against Bloomsburg, dropping game one 10-1 in five innings and game two 3-0.  The losses move the Golden Eagles to 3-23 (0-2 PSAC) on the season.  The Blue and Gold return to action April 7th when they host Pitt-Johnstown in a Friday double-header.

The Bloomsburg pitching staff was the story of both games Sunday, limiting the Golden Eagles bats to just three hits in two games.

The lone hit in game one came in the bottom of the first, a solo homerun from Cassidy Runyan that evened the score at one apiece.  Although Clarion would battle at the plate for the rest of the game, pitcher Taylor Parker and the BU defense simply could not be solved.  A six-inning top of the second from Bloomsburg broke things wide open, eventually leading to a 10-1 five-inning victory.

Game two was a much tighter affair defensively, however CU still struggled to manufacture runs against pitcher Mallory Tomaschik, who threw a complete-game shutout that included eight strikeouts.  No-hit through 2.2 innings, Brigid Stermel  finally broke through with a single to right field in the bottom of the third, however Clarion's chance to strike first was thwarted when Haley Pszyk hit a hard line-drive that managed to fly right into the glove of BU third-basemen Marissa Shelhamer to end CU's rally before it could get going.

A two-run homer in the top of the fourth from Shelhamer gave Bloomsburg the 2-0 advantage, which they would remain in control of the rest of the game.  Clarion pitcher Rachel Hoffman gave up just six hits over seven innings in the loss.
