MANSFIELD, Pa. - The Clarion University softball team dropped both games of a Saturday afternoon double-header to Mansfield University by scores of 9-0 and 5-2. The losses move the Golden Eagles to 3-27 (0-6 PSAC) on the season. The Blue and Gold will return to action tomorrow when they host Pitt-Johnstown at Memorial Stadium in Clarion for a pair of afternoon games.
Mansfield jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in game one thanks to a four hit bottom of the first. Clarion, on the other hand, struggled to find an answer to MU pitcher Arianna Young, who gave up just three hits on the afternoon. Mansfield would tack on four more in the fourth inning to put the game completely out of reach for the Eagles and secure a five-inning victory for Mansfield.
Game two started in a much better fashion for the Blue and Gold when a
Kimberly Burdett single drove in
Taylor Nonnenberg to give Clarion an early 1-0 lead. A
Casey Wilcox solo homer in the second put Clarion up 2-0, however Mansfield wasted no time in getting their comeback effort started.
An RBI single in the bottom of the second cut Clarion's lead in half before MU took a 3-2 lead after left-fielder Laura Lawson tripled to score one before scoring herself on an errant throw at the plate.
Mansfield would add one each in the fourth and fifth to secure their second win of the day.
