Volleyball defeats Charleston, drops nightcap to Wheeling Jesuit

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Clarion University women's volleyball team split a pair of matches Friday in West Virginia, winning the early match 3-1 over University of Charleston, before falling 3-1 to host Wheeling Jesuit in the nightcap.

After play on Friday, the Golden Eagles stand at 7-3 overall on the season.

In the victory over Charleston, the Golden Eagles won the first two sets in commanding fashion 25-15 and 25-18. UC would battle back to take the 3rd set (17-25) before Clarion cruised to a 25-14 win in the 4th set to take the match.

Clarion had a trio of players with double-digit kills, led by senior Taylor Braunagel (Milford, Pa., Delaware Valley) with 18, followed by Olivia Olson (Gibsonia, Pa., Pine-Richland) and Julia Holden (Brunswick, Ohio, Brunswick) who each had 12 kills apiece.

Leah Vensel (Erie, Pa., McDowell) had a game-high 46 assists while Catherine Ferragonio (Irwin, Pa., Norwin) was tops with 22 digs.

In the loss to Wheeling Jesuit (15-25, 26-24, 19-25, 21-25), the Cardinals came out swinging, cruising to a win in the first set. Clarion would show resolve and fight back to win a tough 2nd set, 26-24 before dropping sets three and four, 25-19 and 25-21.

Olson led the way in match two, with 16 kills followed by Braunagel with 14. Vensel added 50 assists, giving her 96 on the day.

Clarion finished the match with a distinct advantage in blocks, 11 to 5, however an uncharacteristic wave of attack and service errors proved too costly to overcome.

Coach Herron will have her squad back in action tomorrow as they travel over to West Liberty University for matches against Fairmont State (1:30pm) and WLU (6:30pm)
