Big second half propels Shippensburg over Clarion

CLARION, Pa- The visiting Shippensburg University Red Raiders used a big second half effort en route to a 31-0 victory over the Clarion Golden Eagles Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.

Clarion drops to 0-3 on the season while Shippensburg stays unbeaten at 3-0.

The game started as a defensive battle, with each team trading a pair of punts over the first four drives of the game.

Shippensburg broke through at the end of the first quarter when quarterback Ryan Zapoticky hooked up with Abel Hoff for a 34-yard touchdown pass to cap a 10 play, 93-yard drive.  The Red Raiders would take a 7-0 advantage into halftime.

With 10:01 to play in the 3rd quarter, Zapoticky again found a Red Raider wide receiver for a long catch and run.  This time is was Winston Eubanks who went for an 80-yard score to extend the Red Raider lead to 14-0.

Shippensburg's Colin McDermott scored on a 5-yard touchdown run on the next possession to make it 21-0 heading into the 4th quarter.  After a Billy Deane field goal, the Red Raiders would put an exclamation point on the game with a 56 yard interception return for a touchdown by Chavez Cheatham.

Clarion had a tough time getting anything going on offense, particularly on the ground where they netted just 19 total yards on 23 carries.

Clarion quarterback Asiantii Woulard (Daytona, Fla., Winter Park) finished the day 12 of 31 for 167 yards and would be replaced by backup Jeff Clemens (Wexford, Pa., North Allegheny) who finished 4 of 9 for 73 yards.

One bright spot for Clarion on Saturday was the play of wide receiver Greg Leonard (Lusby, Md., Patuxent) who finished the day with 7 catches and a game high 157 yards. On the defensive side of the ball, Layne Skundrich (Pittsburgh, Pa., North Allegheny) led the Golden Eagles with 13 total tackles.

Shippensburg outgained the Golden Eagles 519 to 259 on the day while going 11 for 19 on the 3rd down.  Clarion will look to improve on 3rd down, as they converted just 3 of 16 on the afternoon.

The Golden Eagles will turn their attention to Mercyhust University who will travel to Clarion next weekend (Sep 23) for a 1pm kickoff at Memorial Stadium.
