INDIANA, Pa. –
McKenzie Sheesley scored less than a minute into the action, and the Golden Eagle defense combined with goalkeeper
Krista Mosi to make it stand up as Clarion defeated IUP 1-0 on the road on Friday. The Golden Eagles (4-4-1, 3-3-1 PSAC) will host Mansfield at Memorial Stadium on Sunday.
Mosi finished the game having made three saves, good enough for her first shutout win of the year.
Sheesley potted her first goal of the season just 52 seconds into the game, taking a pass from freshman
Dani McNally about eight yards from the edge of the penalty box. She turned to put the ball on her left foot and scorched a shot from 23 yards out, putting it in the top left corner past goalkeeper Makenzie Witzel to put Clarion ahead 1-0. The teams traded pairs of shots in the next seven minutes, with Jessica Kenny and
Stephanie Lias forcing Witzel to make saves.
Neither team put a shot on net for the rest of the half, though, as the defenses went to work keeping their opponents at bay. IUP enjoyed a pair of corner kicks late in the half but could not generate any shots on net.
Carlee Freeberg put the final shot of the day on Witzel in the 59th minute as the Golden Eagles looked for an insurance goal. The Crimson Hawks, on the other hand, never managed to put a shot on Mosi at all. Things heated up near the end of the half as Cassidy LeDonne missed the net wide with less than 30 seconds remaining, but Mosi held on for her first shutout of the year.
