CLARION, Pa. – The Clarion volleyball team rolled their way to their second straight PSAC victory, defeating Cheyney 3-0 (25-8, 25-8, 25-12) in Tippin Gymnasium on Saturday. The Golden Eagles (12-4, 3-1 PSAC) will play a non-conference match at Juniata this week before heading on the road for conference action later in the week.
Â
Jessica Samuels recorded a match- and career-high 13 kills against the Wolves, while hitting .688 with just two errors on 16 swings. Clarion was offensively efficient as a team, hitting .278 and committing just 17 errors on 79 attempts.Â
Shelby Coughenour and
Sarah Boodjeh added six kills apiece.
Â
The serve was a dangerous weapon for the Golden Eagles as well, with Clarion totaling 12 aces against Cheyney. Coughenour added four aces while libero
Kara Coffman notched three of her own.Â
Â
The first big run of the day came in the first set, when Clarion took a 7-4 lead and watched it balloon into a 25-8 victory. Coughenour helped Clarion win the race to 10 points with a kill, and a block by Samuels and
Olivia Olson turned it into a 14-5 advantage. Coffman very nearly served out the set for Clarion after Samuels notched a kill to make it 17-6, leading them on an 8-0 run that forced set point at 24-6. Included in that rally were four kills by Samuels, two aces, and a final kill by Coughenour to cap it. The Golden Eagles took the set on a service error by Cheyney.
Â
The second set started much closer, with Clarion holding just a 9-8 lead early on before taking control. After Samuels posted a kill to make it 10-8, Boodjeh stepped to the service line and ran the table the rest of the way, leading the Golden Eagles to a 16-0 run to close out the second set. Samuels notched back-to-back kills to force set point, and Boodjeh recorded her second ace of the rally to take the game 25-8.
Â
The Golden Eagles opened the third set on a 12-3 run, and the advantage stretched to 18-8 after a kill from Boodjeh. She made it 20-10 a few points later with a kill, and
Shelby Coughenour forced match point with an ace that glanced off Tylisha Ramos-Devine.Â
Christina Cotton finished off the match with a kill, taking a set from
Julia Zimmer and burying it for the win.
