CLARION, Pa. – Trailing by three with less than :30 remaining in the game, senior
Cameron Grumley got a good look at a three-point attempt but it rang out and the Cheyney Wolves held on to win 71-65 in Tippin Gymnasium Wednesday night.
Clarion drops to 3-10 and 0-7 in the PSAC while Cheyney improves 2-8 and 2-4 in league play.
The Golden Eagles held a nine-point lead with just 1:18 left in the first half, but the Wolves mounted a 7-0 run to close out the half, giving Clarion a slim 36-34 lead at the break.
It would be a back and forth second half, until Cheyney built up an eight-point lead with just over 4 minutes remaining. The Golden Eagles would climb back to make it close late, largely in part to
Brandon Williams' career high 25 points. Grumley also added a pair of late three pointers to keep the game in reach as he netted 13 points and 5 assists while playing all 40 minutes.
Freshman
Mason Mraz chipped in a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds while
Maqi Watson anchored the defense with 4 blocks.
For the night, Clarion shot 41% from the floor but just 5 of 21 from three-point range while Cheyney shot 37% from the floor and just 7 of 22 from behind the arc. Both teams pulled down 44 rebounds on the night.
Up next for Clarion is a road trip to Greensburg, Pa for a PSAC matchup against Seton Hill on Saturday January 6
th. Tip-off is set for 3pm.
