CLARION, Pa. – The Clarion football team fell in a rain-soaked, low-scoring game on Saturday afternoon, dropping a 14-7 decision to Edinboro at Memorial Stadium. The Golden Eagles (4-5, 2-4 PSAC West) will close out divisional play against Mercyhurst on Nov. 3.
Neither offense was able to generate much in the way of yards or points due to persistent rain, with the teams going a combined 1-of-5 in the red zone. Scoring plays were few and far between, with the teams trading touchdowns in the second quarter but not lighting the scoreboard again until Edinboro scored midway through the fourth quarter to take the lead.
Mylique McGriff rushed 28 times for 125 yards, including a 10-yard touchdown run in the second quarter that tied the game at 7-7. Passing was difficult in the heavy rain, with quarterback
Jeff Clemens finishing 13-of-23 for 111 yards and an interception. His top target was
Dana Jackson, who caught five passes for 57 yards.
The defense held Edinboro quarterback Jarrod Kellar to just 94 yards passing, though the Fighting Scots found much success running the ball with Walter Fletcher.
Layne Skundrich recorded 10 tackles to go over 300 tackles for his career, making him just the ninth player in Clarion history surpass that mark. The defense forced three turnovers to half Edinboro drives, including an interception and forced fumble from
Sam Fareri and another forced fumble by
Paul Blendinger.
The teams traded turnovers on the first three drives of the game, with the Golden Eagles forcing a fumble on Edinboro's first drive but giving it right back with an interception. Clarion stood tall at the goal line to get the ball back, with Fareri punching the ball loose from Fletcher's hands to stop the drive.
Both offenses continued to stall, until a fluke play in the second quarter put Edinboro in the lead. On second down from the Clarion 33, Kellar was flushed from the pocket and tossed an underthrown ball towards the goal line. Cornerback
Dorian Johnson got two hands on it but couldn't haul it in, and it landed in the hands of Ta'Nauz Gregory for a touchdown.
The Golden Eagles responded with a score on the next drive, with a healthy dose of McGriff and a couple of penalties putting them in scoring position. After a targeting call against the Fighting Scots put Clarion on the 10-yard line, McGriff found open space on the left side for a touchdown run to tie the score.
Both teams had chances to open up the game in the second half, but neither capitalized until Edinboro's second drive of the fourth quarter. The Fighting Scots faced a long field, but Walter Fletcher ripped off an 80-yard run on the third play of the drive for the go-ahead score. The Fighting Scots' defense held off one last Clarion drive, stifling them in Edinboro territory to take the win.
