ABERDEEN, Md. – The Clarion University baseball team dropped both ends of a double header to East Stroudsburg University, falling 8-4 in game one, followed by a 7-2 defeat in game two.
The games were played at the Ripken Complex in Aberdeen, Md., and moved up to Thursday due to weather.
Clarion drops to 5-10 overall while East Stroudsburg improves to 9-7.
Game 1
The Warriors got on the board in the bottom of the first with a 2-out single by Laine Renaud to take a 1-0 lead.
A pair of doubles around a Clarion error would lead to three more runs for East Stroudsburg in the bottom of the third, as they took a controlling 4-0 lead.
Clarion starter
Jeremy Frazier would settle in after that, finishing the day with five innings pitched, allowing five runs, only three earned, while striking out five and walking none.
Left handed reliever
Bailey Durocher would come in to pitch the sixth, surrendering three runs, one earned, on just one hit, and a pair of walks.
The Clarion bats finally broke through in the 7
th inning, as catcher
Austin Blauser laced a 2-run single to right to cut the deficit to 8-2.
Matt Privette would bring in another run on a fielders choice, followed by a
Will Constantin RBI single to make it 8-4. The Warriors got the next batter,
Nick Fugh, to ground out to shortstop to end the game.
Blauser led the Golden Eagles in game one, going 2 for 3 with a pair of RBI's.
Dillon Wolbert,
Cole Shaffer,
Matt Kamenicky, and Constantin each added one hit apiece in the loss.
Game 2
Sloppy play by both teams led to a pair of runs for each squad early in the second game. Knotted at 2-2, East Stroudsburg used three doubles in the bottom of the second inning to take a 4-2 lead. The Warriors would get a solo homer by Renaud followed by an RBI single off the bat of Joey Paolini to take a 6-2 lead in the bottom of the third.
Clarion starter
Nate Torbich would go on to retire the next eight consecutive batters, finishing the game with five innings or work, allowing six runs, three earned, on eight hits. Torbich struck out three and did not walk a batter on the afternoon.
Reliever
Tiler Sadowski pitched the bottom of the sixth, giving up one run on one hit and a walk.
Clarion only managed four hits in the second game, getting singles from Fugh,
Devin Beverly, Shaffer and
Jake Turpin.
Up next for the Golden Eagles is the start of PSAC competition, as Clarion will travel to Gannon for a double header in Erie on Friday March 23
rd.
