MANSFIELD, Pa. – The Clarion women's softball team opened PSAC play with a doubleheader split at Mansfield University Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles (4-14, 1-1 PSAC) took game one by a score of 2-1, before falling 7-3 in the nightcap.
The game one victory over Mansfield was Clarion's first win over the Mounties since April 10, 2011.
Game 1
Clarion got on the board in the top of the third with a single by
Taylor Nonnenberg followed by a Mountie error that allowed
Aryn Boyer to come around to score. Boyer would lace an RBI double to right field the following inning to plate
Macy Rubin, making it 2-0 Clarion.
The Mounties rallied in the seventh, making it 2-1 and putting the tying run in scoring position with 2 outs. Clarion third baseman
Haley Pszyk snagged a line drive for the final out, preserving the win.
Nonnenberg and Boyer led the way for Clarion in the first game, each going 2 for 3. Pszyk ,
Laura Sadowski, and
Natalie Else each recorded hits for the Golden Eagles.
Sarah Gossard got the win on the mound for Clarion, throwing all seven innings, allowing 10 hits and just a single, unearned run. The senior hurler struck out three and did not walk a batter in the game.
Game 2
Once again Clarion struck first in game two, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the second to grab a 2-0 lead.
Moriah Lynn led off the second with a double down the line and came around to score on a single by Sadowski.
Katie Zameroski would follow by lacing a RBI double to score Sadowski.
The Mounties would respond by putting up five runs on four hits in the bottom of the third to take a commanding 5-2 lead. Mansfield would add a pair in the 5
th to extend their lead to 7-2.
Senior
Cassidy Runyan drove a ball deep over the right field fence for her team-leading 4
th homerun of the season to make it 7-3 in the 6
th. The Golden Eagle bats would go quiet in the 7
th as they fell by the final score of 7-3.
Nonnenberg and
Rebecca Kelley recorded multi-hit games for Clarion in game two. Nonnenberg finished the day 4 for 7 at the plate.
Clarion is scheduled next to play at Slippery Rock on Tuesday April 3
rd for a 3pm doubleheader.
