Game Recap: Baseball |

Barton rallies past Clarion to complete doubleheader sweep

WILSON, NC – Despite getting solid starting pitching, the Clarion baseball team dropped both ends of a double-header at Barton College Friday, falling 3-2 in the early game followed by a 9-4 loss in the nightcap.

The losses drop Clarion to 3-6 overall while Barton improves to 9-15 on the season.

Game 1

Sophomore Jeremy Frazier was solid over 6 innings allowing just three earned runs, but was outdueled by Barton ace Trent Fennell, who fanned 16 batters and allowed just five hits and 2 earned runs.

Barton did all their damage in the bottom of third inning, when the Bulldogs strung together four consecutive hits with 2 outs to break the scoreless tie.

The Golden Eagles battled back in the fifth inning, as Garett Goslaw led off with a single to right followed by a 2-out walk by Will Constantin, helping turnover the lineup to leadoff hitter Chandler Palyas. Palyas sent a drive deep to right, beating the outfielder for a 2-run triple to cut the deficit to 3-2.

Both teams went scoreless in the 6th while Clarion left the tying run on base in the 7th as Barton hung on for the 3-2 victory.

Cole Shaffer, Brady Andrews, Devin Beverly, Goslaw and Palyas all recorded hits for Clarion.

Game 2

Freshman Nate Torbich was impressive in his first collegiate start, holding the Bulldogs to six hits and one earned run over 6.1 innings pitched, striking out three and walking one.

Clarion got the scoring started in the 1st inning when a Dillon Wolbert single brought around Nick Fugh to make it 1-0 Clarion. Barton answered in the bottom of the 1st with an unearned run to tie the game 1-1, where it would stay until the 3rd.

In the 3rd inning, Fugh led off with a single, stole second, and was brought around on a RBI single by Beverly. After Beverly swiped third, he was knocked in by Wolbert's double down the left field line to make it 3-1 Clarion.

Clarion would tack a run on in the fifth inning when Jake Turpin lined a two-out single to left center to score Wolbert.

Things took a turn for the worst in the bottom of the 7th, as Barton would send 16 batters to the plate in an 8-run inning to tilt the game in their favor. Both teams would go scoreless in the 8th and 9th as Barton earned the 9-4 win in game 2.

Bailey Durocher was tagged for the loss after allowing four runs, three earned, in the bottom of the 7th inning.

Clarion racked up 10 hits on the game, led by Wolbert who was 3 for 4. Fugh and Andrews were each 2 for 4 on the game as well.

Clarion will now travel to Florence, SC where they continue their spring break trip at Sparrow Stadium, home of Francis Marion University.

Next up for the Golden Eagles will be Fairmont State, who they will play Saturday night at 6pm.
