Softball Falls in Pair at Lock Haven

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Clarion softball team went on a short road trip in a week full of home games on Friday, falling in both ends of a doubleheader at Lock Haven by 8-0 scores.  The Golden Eagles (4-21, 1-7 PSAC Central) will return home tomorrow to host the IUP Crimson Hawks in another divisional clash at 11:30 a.m.

The two games played out as opposite images of one another, in that Lock Haven took a large lead early in the first game but slowed later on, whereas in the late game Clarion kept the Bald Eagles in check before a sixth inning outburst.

Macy Rubin (1-5) threw 5.2 innings in the first game, allowing all eight runs though only two of them were earned.  Sarah Gossard (2-8) fell in the nightcap, allowing eight runs.

The Bald Eagles built a 7-0 lead after just two innings in the first game, culminating with a three-run home run by Bryann Hilty.  Twice Clarion put runners in scoring position to potentially chip away at the lead, including in the top of the fifth inning when Cassidy Runyan led off with a single and Gossard moved her over with a walk.  Lock Haven escaped after Rubin struck out to end the inning, and the Bald Eagles added another run in the sixth inning to wrap up the win.

Game 2 started out much tighter, with Gossard starting off with two perfect innings and snuffing a potential Bald Eagle offensive push in the third.  Lock Haven got the only run they would need in the bottom of the fourth after an RBI single from Hilty, scored another in the fifth, and then tacked on six in the sixth to finish the game.
