Baseball Falls 5-3 to Seton Hill in Rain-Soaked Affair

CLARION, Pa. – The Clarion baseball team put the tying run on the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Golden Eagles were unable to make it all the way back in falling 5-3 to Seton Hill on a rain-soaked Thursday afternoon.  Heavy showers forced the postponement of the scheduled second game between the Golden Eagles and the Griffins, and no makeup plans have yet been announced.

Chance Miranda (0-7) pitched an effective game against the hard-hitting Griffins, allowing three runs on five hits in 4.2 innings.  Dereck Pritchard came in for a strong relief effort, allowing just one earned run in 2.1 innings to close the game.  Mike Connell went 2-for-3 at the plate while Brady Andrews and Dillon Wolbert added RBI's.

Clarion got the on the scoreboard first thanks to some nifty baserunning from left fielder Nick Fugh.  Fugh led the game off with a sharp single to right-center field, followed by a steal of second base to reach scoring position.  A wild pitch from pitcher Perry Dellavalle allowed him to advance to third, with Andrews bringing him home on a chopper to the right side of the infield.

Seton Hill responded with four unanswered runs, including a two-run homer by Tom McCarthy that sailed over the left field fence to make it 4-1.  Andrews made it 4-2 when his bouncer down the third base line was mishandled by McCarthy, allowing Fugh to bust in from second base and score.

Chris Law hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh to make it 5-2, but again the Golden Eagles got some timely hitting to put pressure on the Griffins.  Max Mari hit a one-out double to deep right center field and advanced to third on a wild pitch.  Moments later, Dillon Wolbert pulled a line drive into left field for an RBI single, with the ball skipping under the left fielder's glove for an error.  Pinch runner Matt Privette took third on a passed ball, but Garett Goslaw and Will Constantin struck out in back-to-back plate appearances to end the game.
