Game Recap: Volleyball |

Late rally helps Volleyball split day two

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – An impressive come from behind victory highlighted day two action for the Clarion University volleyball team, as they rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win a five set decision over Lake Superior State.

In the morning match, the Golden Eagles fell 3-0 to perennial power Upper Iowa (15-25, 19-25, 21-25).

Clarion struggled to get the attack going in the early match, and were led by Julia Holden's 11 kills. Christina Cotton recorded 22 digs while setter Leah Vensel added 21 assists.

The Golden Eagles squared off against Lake Superior State in the nightcap, and after dropping a closely contested second set to fall behind 2-0, Coach Herron's squad showed some early resiliency by rallying to win three straight sets and pull off a 3-2 victory to close out the trip.

Clarion saved their best for last, recording a .206 hitting percentage in the fifth set, their best of the day.

Once again the attack was led by Holden with 22 kills, followed by Olivia Olson who added 12 kills of her own.

Senior Lauryn Driscoll recorded a game-high four aces while Vensel helped set the attack with 32 assists.

On the defensive end, Cotton finished with a game-high 39 digs while Olson added six blocks up front.

Clarion will return from Michigan with a 2-2 record and turn their focus towards next weekend as they host the Tony Banner Memorial Tournament.

The tournament will run Thursday-Saturday (Aug 30-Sept 1) in the Student Recreation Center at Clarion University.

Up first for Clarion is a 6pm contest on Thursday against Concord University. The Golden Eagles will then play host to Ursuline and Ohio Dominican on Friday, followed by a match against Cedarville University on Saturday.
