Volleyball Sweeps Bloomsburg in PSAC Play

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Clarion volleyball team completed a weekend sweep on Saturday, shutting out Bloomsburg 3-0 (25-23, 25-12, 25-17) in a road PSAC clash.  The Golden Eagles (12-4, 3-1 PSAC) will have a quick turnaround, hosting Juniata on Tuesday evening.

Julia Holden went off for 14 kills, committing just three errors on 23 swings for a .478 hitting percentage.  Chrissy Cotton provided the defense with 25 digs, while Lauren Aichinger added three solo blocks against the Huskies.

Clarion was efficient throughout the three-setter, hitting .250 as a team while holding Bloomsburg to just a .109 hitting percentage.  Leah Vensel distributed 34 assists, and four Clarion hitters posted attack percentages better than .333.

The first set was the most competitive of the three, with the Huskies and Golden Eagles playing it tight throughout the game.  Olivia Olson tied the score at 21 with a kill, and an error by the Huskies' Autumn Altland on the next point put Clarion ahead by one.  Altland atoned with a block of Olson to tie the score at 22, but then back-to-back errors by the Huskies gave Clarion a set point opportunity. Holden put the set away one point later with a kill, making it a 25-23 set victory.

There was less drama in the second game as the Golden Eagles opened up a quick 10-4 lead, with Vensel launching an ace and the duo of Marissa Robertson and Holden posting back-to-back kills.  Aubrey Wrona had kills on back-to-back points to make it 13-8, and a Jordyn Miller service ace upped the advantage to 19-10.  Aleah Karam and Aichinger closed out the second set, each posting kills to make it 25-12.

It played out much the same way in the third set, as Clarion opened on a dominant 12-2 run to set the tone.  Bloomsburg pulled closer with a 5-0 run, making it 14-8, but the Golden Eagles responded to up the advantage to 19-10 on a kill by Wrona.  A service error by Emma Van Arsdale gave Clarion match point, and Robertson won the match with a kill at 25-17.
