Women's soccer knocks off Mansfield 2-1

MANSFIELD, Pa. – The Clarion women's soccer team got a pair of early first half goals and never looked back, holding off the Mansfield Mounties for a 2-1 PSAC road victory on Sunday.

The Golden Eagles have won their second straight contest to improve to 2-6 on the season while the Mounties remain winless at 0-7.

Senior Veronika Noyszewski got Clarion on the board first in the 17th minute with a shot from eight yards out that beat keeper Brianna Roys. Junior Meliah Roman assisted on the goal with a well-played cross that found the foot of Noyszewski.

Clarion would strike again just two minutes later as sophomore Dani McNally found the back of the net for the first time this season off another well-placed pass by Roman.

The Golden Eagles outshot Mansfield 11-2 during the first 45 minutes and carried a 2-0 lead into halftime.

The Mounties made things interesting as they netted an early second half goal on a through ball to Bria Bittiger who beat Clarion keeper Krista Mosi to cut the lead to 2-1.

Clarion continued to mount pressure, piling up an additional 14 shots in the second half, but Bittiger stood tall, collecting 10 saves on the afternoon.

Fortunately for Clarion, their defense did not budge, and Mosi stopped all four shots she faced after allowing the early goal.

The Golden Eagles outshot Mansfield 25-9 on the day and landed an impressive 12 shots on net, led by Noyszewski and McNally who had four apiece.

Clarion will travel Wednesday (Sep 26) to Pitt-Johnstown for a 4pm PSAC contest.
