Football Wins Fourth Straight, Defeats Seton Hill 19-16

GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Clarion football team held off a second half rally on Saturday afternoon, defeating Seton Hill 19-16 at Offutt Field.  The Golden Eagles (4-1, 2-0 PSAC West) have won four straight games for the first time since 2015, when they opened the season with seven straight victories.

Clarion scored 19 unanswered points after starting down 7-0, taking all the lead they would need through three quarters of action.  The Golden Eagles took the lead for good in the second quarter after a 10-point effort, never relinquishing it to the Griffins again through the course of the game.

The Golden Eagles once again shut down the opposing running attack, holding the Griffins to 58 yards on the ground.  Seton Hill scored 16 points, the most points scored against Clarion in the last three weeks.

Jeff Clemens got the start under center, completing 15-of-28 passes for 268 yards for a touchdown while also rushing for another.  Included in that passing total was a 45-yard pass to Dana Jackson in the second quarter to put Clarion ahead 16-7.  James Metzgar added a pair of field goals, including the game-winner in the fourth quarter.

Defensively, Chris Gildea and Corey Wells each added interceptions to quash Griffin drives, as well as two defended passes each.  Gildea also added a blocked punt in the second quarter, the second blocked kick for Clarion in as many games.

The Griffins got off to a good start, taking a 7-0 lead after an eight-play, 80-yard drive in the first quarter.  Clemens led a six-play, 13-yard yard drive midway through the second quarter, striking quickly to pull Clarion within a point of the Griffins.  Scott Florence ripped off a 16-yard run to put Clarion at the Griffins' 6-yard line, and three plays later Clemens rushed in from five yards out for the touchdown.

The Golden Eagles struck again the in second quarter, taking the lead and holding it for the rest of the game.  Keanu Young broke off a 25-yard gain on a screen pass to get things started, putting the Clarion on the Seton Hill 45-yard line.  Two plays later, Clemens hit Dana Jackson on a long pass to score, marking the second straight week that Jackson has scored and putting Clarion ahead 16-7.

James Metzgar added a field goal with 4:25 left in the fourth quarter to put Clarion ahead 19-10, but Seton Hill added a touchdown from Ardell Brown with 1:48 left to pull within three points.  Dorian Johnson recovered the onside kick by Seton hill to give the Golden Eagles the ball and seal the win.
