CLARION, Pa. – The Clarion women's basketball team rallied in the third quarter to pull within a single basket, but the Golden Eagles were unable to complete the comeback in falling 74-62 to Seton Hill at the Student Recreation Center on Wednesday. Clarion (7-7, 1-6 PSAC) will host Mercyhurst in another PSAC West contest on Saturday.
The Griffins led by as many as eight points in the third quarter, but the Golden Eagles rallied and cut the deficit to just two points by the final quarter break. It remained a one-possession game midway through the fourth quarter, with Clarion trailing by a score of 59-57, but Seton Hill went on a 13-0 run to come away with the victory.
Kadijah Dickson led the way with a team-high 20 points on 7-of-16 shooting while also pulling down a game-high nine rebounds.
Yndiah Bobo also broke double-figures with 15 points.
Emily Hegedus got some of her most extended minutes of the season to date and did not disappoint, posting nine points.
Clarion won the battle of the first quarter, taking a 12-9 lead into the first period break thanks in part to a 7-2 run to open the game. Dickson finished off an and-one to make it 5-2, and
Yasmin Lewis scored in the paint with 5:35 remaining in the quarter to make it a five-point advantage. Dickson gave Clarion an 11-7 advantage with a make at the 1:41 mark of the period, and Hegedus set the lead at three points with a free throw in the final seconds.
The Golden Eagles still held a slight edge in the second quarter, with
Imani Dockery scoring off a feed from Dickson at the 6:47 mark to take a 20-17 lead. The Griffins took control of the remainder of the half, going on a 14-4 run to build a 31-24 advantage. Bobo cut that lead to two buckets with 45 seconds left in the half, sinking a free throw to make it 33-27 at the break.
Try though they might, the Golden Eagles never took the lead back, cutting it to a single point at one part of the third quarter but never quite finishing it off. They almost erased an eight-point deficit, pulling to within 46-45 after a pair of free throws from Dickson, and the junior scored in the final seconds of the third quarter to cut it to 49-47 entering the final period.
