CLARION, Pa. - The Clarion Women's Soccer team squared off against PSAC opponent IUP Wednesday night at Memorial Stadium, falling by a final score of 2-0. Clarion (1-8-0, 0-8-0) will head on the road for a conference matchup against Slippery Rock on October 12 before returning home to face Cal U on October 16.
The matchup proved to be a very physical one as the teams combined for 19 total fouls. IUP's Devion Anderson picked up the only yellow card of the match in the 77
th minute.
Clarion matched the Crimson Hawks in total shots with 12, including seven in the second half, but were unable to sneak one past the keeper as the Crimson Hawks claimed the win.
Mahogany Willis scored in the first minute of the second half, giving the Crimson Hawks the early lead they needed in the contest. Willis took the opening kickoff down the field and beat keeper
Brigid Stermel and the Clarion defense to give her, her 11
th goal of the season. IUP added to the lead in the 73
rd minute when Alayna Ryan knocked one past the outstretched arms of Stermel on a cross into the box from Mya Hilliard.
The best Golden Eagle opportunity came on a free kick when
Andie Hill sent a 30 yard shot into the box that missed just left and was knocked out of bounds by the IUP keeper, Madeline Smakulski. Hill had multiple opportunities on net , firing a couple shots from a distance and a header inside the box but she was unable to find the back of net.
Abigail Sullivan had the other shot on goal for Clarion but was stonewalled by the Crimson Hawk keeper.
