Women's Soccer Ends 2019 Season with Win Over IUP

INDIANA, Pa. – The women's soccer team closed their 2019 season Saturday afternoon, victorious over the IUP Crimson Hawks 1-0.

The Golden Eagles close 2019 with an overall record of 5-12-1 overall and 4-11-1 in the PSAC.

IUP started the game hot, peppering keeper Brigid Stermel with 14 shots in the first half. Mahogany Willis led the way for the Crimson Hawks in shots tallying six total and four on goal.

Clarion was also powered by their offense, scoring the go-ahead goal in the second half of the match. Julianna Iocco scored her first goal of the season in the 65th minute when she beat Crimson Hawk keeper Madeline Smakulski off of a corner kick from Courtni Hamm.

There was a host of Golden Eagles who tallied shots on the afternoon with Meliah Roman, Andie Hill, Madison Spitko and Iocco all placing shots on goal. Alexis Moyer also tallied a shot on the afternoon.

Stermel had another solid afternoon making a season high 13 saves on the day, stonewalling the Crimson Hawk attack. She ends her career with 215 career saves in over 4,000 minutes played in a Blue and Gold uniform good enough for sixth all-time on program history.

Clarion ended the game with five total shots compared to IUP's 20, but the Golden Eagles made those five shots count. The Crimson Hawks also led in the corner kick category 3-2.

Coach Afrim Latifi's squad will look to build on this season's success as they plan ahead for 2020.
