KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Clarion softball team returned to action for the first time in two weeks, falling in a pair of contests on the first day of the PFX Spring Games in Florida. The Golden Eagles fell 8-5 to Wayne State (Neb.) in the early contest before falling 13-1 to Concordia-St. Paul in the late game. Clarion (0-8) will be back in action tomorrow against Cedarville and Seton Hill.
Jessica Cartia tied the program's all-time home run record in the third inning against Wayne State, belting a two-run homer over the left field fence to score
Makenzie Wolfe and put the Golden Eagles ahead 2-1. It was Cartia's 11
th career blast, achieved in just 42 career games, and tied her with
Carlie Cook's total set in 2011.
Cartia finished the day 3-of-6 at the plate with three RBIs and one run scored, including a pair of doubles. In fact six Golden Eagles went off for multiple hits against Wayne State, though Clarion only recorded two total hits against Concordia-St. Paul.
The Golden Eagles blew up for a five-run third inning against Wayne State, taking a 5-1 lead thanks in part to Cartia's two-run blast.
Katie Zameroski lined a ball to left field to bring
Rebecca Kelley home, and
Taylor Nonnenberg made her season debut with a two-run double to close the inning and put Clarion ahead 5-1. Wayne State rallied back from there, scoring six runs in the fourth inning to take the lead.
Chelsea Liroff (0-2) suffered the loss with three runs allowed in three innings.
Things were much more lopsided in the nightcap as Concordia-St. Paul opened up with a seven-run top of the first. Cartia responded with another RBI, this time rapping the ball to center field to bring
Moriah Lynn across the plate. Kelley (0-3) allowed 12 runs in 3.1 innings for the loss, while
Macy Rubin allowed just one run in 1.2 innings of relief.
