Softball Finds Its Power, But Drops Pair on Thursday

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Clarion softball team finished up its penultimate day at the PFX Spring Games, falling by identical scores of 11-3 Wayne State (Neb.) and Northern State in a Thursday doubleheader.  The Golden Eagles will conclude their week in Florida tomorrow when they face off with Nyack.

Clarion batters combined for three home runs on the day, with Taylor Nonnenberg, Rebecca Kelley and Haley Pszyk each smacking their first home runs of the season.  Nonnenberg's came in the early against the Wildcats, while the latter two came against the Wolves and helped put the Golden Eagles ahead by a score of 3-1.

Pszyk's blast came in the top of the second inning against the Wolves, scoring Kelley after she reached on a one-out single.  Kelley followed with her own clout in the fourth inning, a one-out shot that went over the center field fence.  That gave Clarion a 3-1 advantage over Northern State through four innings, though the lead was not to last as the Wolves countered with seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take an 8-3 lead.

Northern State followed up with three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, clinching the win with an eight-run advantage.  Macy Rubin (0-5) suffered the defeat with eight runs allowed, though just five were earned.

In the early game against Wayne State, the two teams battled back and forth early before the Wildcats took the lead for good in the top of the fourth inning.  Jessica Cartia opened the scoring with an RBI single and Katie Zameroski followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Makenzie Wolfe, making it 2-0.  Nonnenberg broke a 2-2 deadlock with a home run in the bottom of the third inning, a solo shot that made it 3-2, but the Wildcats scored nine unanswered runs to close the game.  Kelley (0-6) game up 10 runs – just three earned – in the loss.
