Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Swept by Cal U

BUTLER, Pa. - Ending their four game series against Cal U, the Clarion baseball team dropped both halves of a doubleheader to the Vulcans at Pullman Park. The Golden Eagles (15-21, 5-11 PSAC West) fell by a score of 8-0 in the first game and by a 20-8 score in the second.

Kyler Mellott fell in the early game, allowing six runs in 3.0 innings pitched. Jeremy Frazier threw in the nightcap, allowing six runs over 3.1 innings. Alex Ficorilli and Ben Barth paced the offense in game one, each going 2 for 3.

The Vulcans got the scoring started in the top of the third inning tacked on one run in the top of the third inning, courtesy of an Eric Fairman single that scored Ben Maudie. The score would remain 1-0 until the top of the fourth inning when the Vulcan offense exploded for six runs starting with a Louden Conte homerun to left field to get the scoring train rolling. Taking full control of the game, Cal U tacked on one more run in the top of the fifth inning when Patrick Brogan homered to left field to end the scoring and push the lead to the final score of 8-0.

Tyler Eritz picked up the win for Cal U tossing a complete game shutout, allowing eight hits while striking out three Clarion batters.

The hit totals were almost even in game one with Clarion contributing eight hits to the Vulcans nine but were unable to push a run across the plate.

Much like game one Clarion had a tough time getting things going offensively in Game 2, but were able to break through in the scoring column in the bottom of the fourth inning scoring one run courtesy of a Cole Shaffer SAC Fly that scored Thomas Lavin who doubled to center field in a previous at bat.

Cal U picked up three runs in the top of the second and the top of the fourth to make the score 6-0 before Clarion would get into the scoring column. The Vulcans added six more runs in the top of the fifth inning to make It 12-1, but Clarion would battle back and add six runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning.

After Chandler Palyas walked to lead off the inning Ficorilli singled up the middle to put runners on first and second base. Bryce Jackson singled through the left side scoring Palyas. Brian Casper loaded the bases in the next at bat and Lavin drove in two of the three runners when he singled to center field making the score 12-4. Ben Barth added two more runs cutting the Vulcan lead in half when he doubled down the right field line plating Lavin and Casper. Cole Shaffer made the score 12-7 to end the scoring when he grounded out to first base scoring Barth.

The Vulcans answered back in the top of the sixth inning, scoring four runs to push the lead to 16-7.

Clarion tacked on one run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Lavin singled to right field driving in Ficorilli but were unable to score any more runs. Cal U added four more runs in the top of the seventh inning to put the game out of reach for good making it the final score of 20-8.

Despite the large deficit the Golden Eagles managed to string together 13 hits in the ballgame.

The Blue and Gold will be back in action on Tuesday when they host the Mansfield Mounties in a single nine inning game at home.
