Softball Swept by Mansfield

MANSFIELD, Pa. – The Clarion softball team dropped both ends of a road doubleheader on Monday, falling by scores of 5-2 and 15-0 to Mansfield at Lutes Field.  The Golden Eagles (0-37, 0-14 PSAC Central) will return home to host Pitt-Johnstown tomorrow afternoon at Memorial Field.

Rebecca Kelley went 3-for-6 at the dish on Monday afternoon, including a two-run double in the first game that briefly gave the Golden Eagles a 2-0 advantage over the Mounties.  Moriah Lynn went a combined 4-for-6 in the leadoff spot, including three hits in the first game, while also scoring a run and reaching on a walk.

The first game was close into the late innings, with Macy Rubin (0-16) keeping the Mounties off the board in the first four innings of action.  She worked out of a jam in the second inning, with runners on second and third and two outs, and again held a runner at third base by inducing a groundout in the fourth.  Noelle Murray and Lynn came around to score on Kelley's double to center field in the top of the fifth inning to make it 2-0, but Mansfield responded with a pair of runs in the home half of the inning to tie the score.  The Mounties tacked on three more runs in the sixth inning to bump the lead to 5-2, but the Golden Eagles had a chance to pull back after loading the bases when Kelley was hit by a pitch.  Jessica Cartia tapped a ground ball to the shortstop with two outs, and Mansfield got out of the inning by getting Makenzie Wolfe at third base.

The Mounties were in control of the late game from the outset, scoring 10 runs in the bottom of the second inning.  Wolfe and Lynn looked like they had something going with back-to-back singles in the top of the third inning, but Mansfield retired Kelley and Cartia in succession to end the threat.  Clarion loaded the bases in the top of the fifth inning on a single by Kelley, but Cartia popped out to end the inning and the game.
