Baseball Closes Out the Weekend at the USA Baseball Complex

CARY, NC - Closing out their weekend road trip to the USA Baseball Complex in Cary, North Carolina, the Clarion baseball team fell to the Tiffin Dragons by a final score of 14-2. Clarion is now 0-7 on the young season, while Tiffin improves to 3-0.

Clarion picked up one run in the bottom of the first inning after a lead off Matt Privette single turned into points as he advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt and later scored on a sac fly from Nick Fugh after being moved over to third base by Will Constantin on a sac-bunt.

The Golden Eagles held the lead until the top of the third inning when Tiffin tied the game after a Nich Green Sac-Fly that plated Cody Orr who led off the inning off with a single through the left side of the infield.

The game remained tied at one a piece until the top of the fourth inning when the Dragons picked up four runs on four hits to give them a commanding 5-1 lead.
The Tiffin bats exploded again in the top of the eighth inning as the Golden Eagles gave up nine runs on four singles, two doubles and two walks.

With the score now 14-1 midway through the contest the Blue and Gold were able to pick up one more run in the bottom of the ninth. A wild pitch allowed Tim Irons to score, who doubled to left field earlier in the inning, but Clarion would get no closer.

Clarion threatened the Tiffin lead all game long putting runners in scoring position, seven times through nine innings, but stranded 10 runners on base unable to capitalize on the success at the plate.

Kyler Mellott (0-2) got the nod for Clarion, tossing 5.1 innings of seven hit baseball, striking out three Dragon batters. Bryce Grenet threw 1.2 innings allowing two hits. Sam Rice and Joe Rossi closed the game out for the Golden Eagle pitching staff allow a combined, five runs on four hits and one strike out.

Fugh lead the way for the Clarion attack going 3-of-4 with one RBI and a double.

Clarion will be back in action on February 28th when they travel to Glenville, West Virginia to take on Wheeling in the opening day of the PSAC / MEC Challenge. First pitch is scheduled for 9:30 am.
